What Makes a Healthy Diet Plan

healthy diet

If you’re a serial yo-yo dieter then there’s a good chance that at some point, you’ll decide that you need a healthy diet plan, instead of all the crash diets out there. However, how do you know what a healthy diet plan is?

The fact is, no matter what the specifics of each healthy diet is, they share a few common traits.

A Healthy Diet Plan Is Balanced

The first thing you should look for, when you’re looking for a healthy diet plan, is a plan that is balanced. That means a plan that contains protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and a little healthy fat.

Any diets that tell you to cut out a food group, or groups, completely, is probably not a healthy diet plan, and should be avoided.

A Healthy Diet Plan Sets Realistic Portion Sizes

If you look at the portions specified in your diet plan, and they’re not big enough to keep a three year old alive and happy, then you’re probably not looking at a healthy eating plan.

A good healthy diet plan will allow you to eat enough to keep yourself satisfied while you’re losing weight, which makes it sustainable, and also keeps your metabolism ticking over properly.

A Healthy Diet Is Not Boring

There are several diet plans out there that require you to eat one type of food for days or weeks on end. Those are not examples of a healthy diet plan. In order for a diet plan to be healthy, you need to be able to eat a variety of foods, since different types of foods contain different vitamins and minerals, all of which our bodies need for various functions.

If you find yourself staring at the same meals day in and day out, then you’re probably not following a healthy diet plan.

A Healthy Diet Plan Allows for Treats

Do you know why most people cheat on their diets? Because their diets don’t allow them to have anything nice. Ever.

A good diet plan makes allowance for the occasional treat, every once in a while. It might be a square of chocolate (instead of a bar) or it might be a glass of wine on a Friday night. Whatever it is, those little treats that are part of your healthy diet plan make it much, much easier to stick to a virtuous menu the rest of the time!

A Healthy Diet Plan Takes Time

Most of the diets that promise overnight results are not based on healthy weight loss ideals at all. You might not like it, but in the vast majority of cases, it takes time to see results on a healthy diet plan. The good news, however, is that when you find a healthy eating plan, and stick to it, you’ll see sustainable results, and once it does start to work, you’ll lose weight almost on autopilot.

A healthy diet plan really isn’t a diet at all. A healthy diet plan is a lifestyle.
